    1977 KZ650

    This one cracks me up.
I bought this KZ650 new in June '77 for $1800 including tax. I rode it for five years and amassed about 80,000 miles on it with nary a repair.
This photo was from its first long trip to upstate New York in late August of the same year. This location is the Pennsylvania Lumber Museum near Galeton, Pennsylvania.
That's a Bates Leather jacket and a Bell Super Magnum. Aftermarket shocks, natch, in the first month of ownership.
Two Eclipse tank bags, one on the tank and one on the luggage rack, typically did the carrying needs in those simple times. I still use an Eclipse every single day, four-plus decades later.
The importance of this bike for me was that it was my first "real" Japanese bike, partly replacing my BSA twin.
I walked into Illinois Kawasaki in Des Plaines, Illinois one day and was greeted by Doug Meyers, the sales manager. You may recognize him also as the Muzzy sales manager/executive for many years thereafter. Doug offered me a free test ride on this bike, which astounded me. I'd never heard of a test ride at a dealer before.
A fascinating dealership it was, owned by a businessman who'd made an investment and while he cared not a whit for motorcycles, he wanted a first-class operation. Which it definitely was. Too bad that when he retired after several very successful years, the next owner was not so astute.
This bike utterly changed the world for me: it never failed or even stuttered. I always knew I was going to arrive, whether it was at work in the city or in high mountains of Utah. What a fabulous bike.

They sure are great bikes, I've got 3 of them, as you can see in the thread I posted above.
One of them is almost exactly like yours was.

    Re: 1977 KZ650

    Trigrnzrx, you mention tires.
Indeed. My 650 went through so many tires I could never count.
At the time, the Dunlop K81 triangular-section tire was the hot setup, and they were certainly better than the K70s and those sorts of things that preceded them. But they were soft and I barely got 7000 miles a set if that.
It got so that I would call the dealer on a rainy morning- I was a carpenter working outside then and rain was usually a day off- and I would stop on the way home to have them do a tire swap while I waited. Excellent service!
The Continentals came along about that time and I switched to those. Better in the rain and lasted almost twice as long, and still with good enough performance leaned over.
Another backstory to this KZ650 was that I replaced the OEM chain at 42K, and Chas the parts manager hung it up on the wall behind the parts counter to chasten the, er, younger riders into doing a bit of chain maintenance. He was sick of explaining that a never-lubed chain wearing out in 5000 miles was not warranty-able.
This bike spoiled me forever, having one I could just jump on and ride to Vermont without so much as a check of the oil level and chain slack not even thinking of it not getting me home again.

Nice looking bike I bought one new in 79 the blue with gold stripes and mag wheels for $2350 total so not terrible. Great bike that was a lot of fun. I did not ride near the miles you did on yours but I am sure we both had fun. Nice story. Still hope to ride with you this year. Send me a pm if you have any time you could get away. My brother is in Sugar Grove and when comes my way or I his I can let you know as well.

I was gonna buy one. Seemed it would be more capable than the GS550 I was looking at. ESP. double. The guy told me $2,800 So I worked at a Datsun/Suzuki dealer. 1078 GS750 E $2079 OTD
So I got that. rode Suzuki's for many years. Had Suzuki quads .

such a shame all the manufacturers go to so much trouble to make a standard look like a Transformer when they have made such graceful bikes in the past. I do not understand styling at all

Not riding my 650C2 much anymore since buying a ZRX.
Have had my C2 since High School, and don't think I will ever sell her.
The ZRX may just fall into the same trap.
