    HOW TO DELETE A THREAD

Some of the Admins, Super Mods, and Mods got together, trying to decide what kind of crappy change we could make to the message board to make your lives miserable. We came up with several good ideas, but seeing that most of those would have gotten us tarred and feathered we decided on only one little change, which, as it turns out, will prolly, in the long run, make things better for all of us...

You can no longer delete a thread by deleting the first post in said thread.

You CAN EDIT THE FIRST POST of a thread (if you are the one who made it, of course.)

You CAN NOT DELETE THE FIRST POST of a thread.

If you think a first-post or an entire thread needs deleted ask a Super Moderator, a Moderator or an Administrator and it will be dealt with quickly.

We did this to prevent loss of valuable information.

If you need a thread moved, copied, stuck, deleted, edited, or anything else, just ask, and we'll get right on it.

    Added October 27:

In the event a thread or "first" post needs deleted, post details in the Board Issues forum, or send a PM to the Moderator of that forum, or to any Moderator or Administrator. Someone will deal with the thread / post as soon as required.

We did this for only one reason: too often we lose some very good information that is in a thread because the first post gets deleted and all posts after the first one goes down the tube with it.

Want your first post deleted? We can do that by splitting the good info out, then deleting the rest. You could also just go edit your post, leaving behind a single letter or character. A period will work.

So what do you do when a thread you start turns into a fiasco?

    As they often do.

You contact a Mod or Admin and ask them to deal with it.

We did this to prevent loss of valuable information. <<< Yep. Good stuff has gotten deleted. We're just here to prevent that.

Like those great P&R threads, N&C pics??? <<< Yep. AND some others.

I dunno the thread starter should have the right to delete and posters beware... just my .02 <<< Thanks for the coin. The thread starter can either edit out all of his post, or he can ask a mod to delete the thread. If there is some valuable information in that thread we might just save the good parts. At least this way we don't have to worry about one sour-puss deleting 20 or 200 informational posts that a couple of thousand of us wish we still had.

However, all the Mods & Admin you've got the "power" and all who enter are subject to the rules & regulations. <<< Welcome to Planet Earth. There are a few things you'll need to learn and to accept. I'm sure you'll do fine.

BTW ya'll are doing a pretty good job at keeping people "even" keeled!!! <<< Thanks, from all of us. And thank you for all that you do.

    ----------------
All we're after is saving good posts from being deleted. If it's bad, and the thread starter wants it gone or cleaned up we'll have the job taken care of in just a couple of minutes, and, two years down the road, we won't be sorry we lost a countersteering or braking thread. Or a good carb-service thread. Or some nice pics.

BTW - You can still delete the first post and your own thread in the Test forum.

Maybe the better tactic is to leave stuff up. Maybe people would stop and consider if they want their idiocy documented in perpetuity.

Maybe every thread should be deleted after thirty-days. That way there is less chance for someone to be offended.

As it is now, if a thread gets "spirited" we know that someone will come by and zap it.

Most of the time, I would agree. Mostly I would lock them and leave them ... but I'm not in charge.

Sometimes they are locked and left ... and three or four more threads try to pick up after the locked one. Well ... that sort of goes against the point of locking them ... and those need to get deleted.

There are some comments that just need to be deleted.

In some forums, there is nothing of archival value ... so deleting them after a certain amount of time of no new posts does happen.

Break out the champagne ... there is something that we agree on. I would rather err on the side of leaving stuff if possible.

Re: HOW TO DELETE A THREAD

I think that the starter of a thread should be allowed to delete his/her thread. Also I believe that there should not be a time limit on deleting individual posts in a thread.
Just doesnt make sense to me.

    My two cents

Not fair that someone should be able to delete 200 posts following the original, tho.
