Quite racing? Hmmm, let me think on it.

Just got a message from the boss asking me how important racing motorycles is to me.

Some of you may recall that he was getting quotes for a Key Man insurance policy on me. Well it seems the quotes have arrived and apparently they're high enough for him to feel the need to ask the aforementioned question.

He stated that he's not going to tell me what to do, but if I can live without the racing (no pun intended ), that would be preferable.

    Hmmm.....

I'm really curious to find out what kind of premium price difference we're talking about here. Kind of weird knowing that my hobbies are about to become a financial burden on my boss.

Chris. Do you guys win money at the races you participate in? I noticed a huge difference in covering somone who indulges in "Amateur" Motorcycle racing vs somone who actually receives or anticipates winning money in events.. You might want to let your boss know there is a difference " in some cases" .. Good luck..

I've read about it before but have never known someone this has happened to before. Sounds like you really like your work and your boss is very happy with you,,, even to the point of "asking" you instead of "telling" you.

Could there be a compromise? By that, I mean could you be happy doin' track days instead of competitive racing? Probably a stupid question because I know how I was "back in the day". I'd eat jam sammiches before I'd stop racin'. Hehehe,, I amlost did too but the worst I got was 'loney meat sammiches and RC's.

Sounds like your boss knows how much you love racing. Also sounds like you and him need to go to lunch and have a good talk.

I used to hate hearing this, but now it is what I go by. My high school football coach always preached, "let your conscience be your guide".

I had a boss tell me to quit racing several years ago. At the time I'd worked there 8 years without missing a day's work to illness or injury, and I reminded him that I'd missed a lot less work than most of the couch potatoes I worked with. He let it drop, and I didn't mention it again.

You could explain to him that you're more at risk on the street than the track, but that could backfire on you.

Work infringes enough into "personal time" afraid I'd have to tell him sorry, it's what I like.

Spoke with the boss last night. This is a non-issue. He was just asking to try an determine my plans before actually signing the policy. If my plans were to quit this season he'd be signing a different policy than if I didn't quit. Pretty much that simple.

He races mountainbikes (placed first in Statewide competition last year in his age bracket ) so he KNOWS what it's like to love a hobby and has no desire at all to take that away. Or for that matter even put me in a situation that would have me even faced with that decision.

I did however explain to him that if I did quit racing on his behalf he'd have to pony up about 8 more paid vacation days since I would definitely be attending track days instead, which generally are only available on Mondays or Fridays. There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone while that sunk in.

I'm having the insurance agent send me a copy of the exclusions to this policy to make sure there's nothing else I do that might be an issue. My boss thought that was a great idea. He knows me too well.
